Abstract

To produce a lustrous zinc surface and to protect such surface against corrosion, particularly zinc surfaces produced by electrodeposition from baths containing no brightening agents, the zinc surface is treated with a chromic acid solution which forms on the zinc a yellow-brown iridescent stain and then subjecting the surface to treatment with an alkaline reducing solution of hydrosulphite until the stains are removed and a bright lustrous finish is obtained. The chromic acid solution may comprise 34-36 ozs./gal. of chromic acid, 3.4-4.6 ozs./gal. of ammonium persulphate and a stable wetting agent such as licorice powder, the remainder being water. The hydrosulphite solution may contain 1-1.5 ozs./gal. sodium hydroxide and 1-1.5 ozs./gal. of sodium hydro-sulphite and the remainder water.
