Abstract

Successive metallic surfaces are treated with a solution of a primary phosphate of a metal which enters the coating, e.g. zinc, the solution containing a chlorate as the sole oxidizing accelerator, and the solution is replenished in phosphate and chlorate as the treatment proceeds, the initial and replenishment solutions being the same or substantially the same and the ratio of phosphate to chlorate in the solutions being from 1:0.3 to 1:0.6. A non-oxidizing accelerator, e.g. a cobalt, nickel or copper salt may also be present.
