Abstract

A metal surface is phosphated by immersion in a coating phosphate solution containing a nitrite and an amount of a tripolyphosphate or hexametaphosphate or both less than 0.8g/l. The coating phosphate is preferably zinc phosphate and the nitrite, sodium nitrite. The solution, which may also contain nitrate and cations such as copper or nickel, is replenished by adding coating phosphate ingredients, a nitrite, and an amount of tripolyphosphate and/or hexametaphosphate between 0.3 and 0.6g/sq.m. of treated surface, the ratio of nitrite to tripolyphosphate and/or hexametaphosphate being between 2 : 1 and 1 : 6. Coatings may be formed on iron, steel, zinc and aluminium.
