Abstract

558,792. Coating metals. PYRENE CO., Ltd., and CLIFFORD, W. J. (Parker Rust-Proof Co.). April 7, 1942, No. 4565. [Class 82 (ii)] Protective coatings suitable for subsequent coating are produced on an iron, zinc or steel surface by first treating the latter with a solution of an hydrolysable iron salt to produce a thin, continous visible coating, then applying a dilute solution that includes a compound of hexavelent chromium as its sole or main coating constituent, the total amount of chromium not substantially exceeding that which can be reduced by the ferrous iron in the coating and then drying the second solution on the surface with reduction of most of the chromium to the trivalent form. Ferric salts such as the sulphate, chloride, perchlorate, chlorate, fluoride bromide or bromate or ferrous sulphate, chloride, fluoride and bromide may be used and the chromate solution may include other constituents such as phosphate radicles. The first coating may be rinsed before the application of the second solution either by spraying or immersion. Specification 534,852 is referred to.
