Abstract
915,963. Protecting iron and steel surfaces electrolytically. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. May 27, 1959 [May 30, 1958], No. 18127/59. Class 41. Iron and steel surfaces are protected and made corrosion resistant by cathodically treating with an electrolyte containing chromic anhydride, boric acid, phosphoric acid and a trivalent chromium ion which may be present as an added chromium salt, e.g. chromium acetate, or formed by adding a reducing agent, e.g. oxalic acid, which reacts with part of the chromic anhydride. It is stated that the coating includes chromium phosphate and chromium chromate. The preferred electrolyte contains per litre, 10 to 20 g. CrO 3 , 1 to 5 g. tri-valent Cr ions, 3 to 10 g. phosphoric acid and 1 to 20 g. H 3 BO 3 , and is used at 15 to 80 C., applying 10 to 300 A.S.F. for about 1 second. The surface is then allowed to drain, and dry.
