Abstract
1,235,893. Improving corrosion resistance of ferrous bodies. NIPPON STEEL CORP. April 22, 1968 [April 21, 1967 (2); April 26, 1967], No.18897/68. Heading C7B. A method of improving the resistance to corrosion of an iron or steel body having a film on its surface of metallic chromium and/or hydrated chromium oxide comprises dipping the body into an aqueous bath containing one or more of sulphurcontaining anions, halogen-containing anions, and nitric acid ions and substantially free from ions which plate out as metal from the bath and electrolytically treating it as cathode so that a hydrogen discharge occurs which modifies the chromium or hydrated chromium oxide film. Typically this cathodic hydrogen treatment is effected in an IN bath of sodium sulphate at 20‹ C. or 50‹ C., or from IN solutions of sodium fluoride, sodium chloride or ammonium sulphate at 50‹ C., the current density and treatment time varying over wide ranges. The chromium and hydrated chromium oxide films may be electro-deposited on the iron or steel body from the usual baths or the hydrated chromium oxide may be cathodically deposited from a low concentration chromic acid bath containing sodium perchlorate. The hydrogen treated bodies readily receive synthetic resin paints.
