Abstract

927,284. Preventing corrosion, cathodically. SINCLAIR REFINING CO. July 7, 1959 [July 30, 1958], No. 23243/59. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XXXVI] Iron and steel surfaces in contact with a corrosive liquid, especially soil or sea water containing dissolved oxygen contained in ballast tanks, or in contact with pipe lines, are protected by adding to the liquid small amounts of ions of Zn, Cd, or Mn, and applying a D.C. potential with the steel surface as cathode of minus 0.2 to 1.5 volts. Halides or sulphates of the metals are used and glucose may be added to form a 0.001 N to 0.01 N solution of the salt. After a current density of 1 to 50 milliamps per S.F. has been applied, the current may be reduced. The potential may be generated by a magnesium anode. It is stated that the metal ions are plated on the steel surface, and may then be converted to insoluble hydroxides or basic carbonates. U.S.A. Specification 2,200,469 is referred to.
