Abstract

919,451. Preventing corrosion. SINCLAIR REFINING CO. May 20, 1960 [July 27, 1959], No. 17876/60. Class 123 (1). Corrosion of ships' tanks containing sea-water ballast or iron or steel storage tanks for impure water is reduced by adding to the seawater &c. a small amount of a mixture of a zinc salt such es the acetate, borate nitrate, sulphate and most of the halides and halates and a watersoluble arsenic compound such as the sodium potassium, ammonium and hydrogen arsenates and arsenites or some organic arsenic esters. A preferred mixture consists of equal weights of zinc chloride or sulphate and arsenic or arsenous acids, the mixture being added in the dry state or as a solution or suspension in water, preferably in amounts from 750 to 1250 p.p.m. The additive may also be used in conjunction with a galvanic or impressed current cathodic protection system when the anode consumption or current required is much reduced. When used in this manner less additive is required, from 15 to 75 p.p.m. of a mixture of one part of the arsenic compound to one to five parts of the zinc salt being adequate.
