Abstract

543,627. Preventing corrosion. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and MURRAY, G. Oct. 17, 1940, No. 15380. [Class 72] [Also in Groups III and XII] Corrosion of a mild steel container 13 adapted to contain molten alkali nitrate used for heattreating aluminium and its alloys is prevented by making it cathodic with respect to an anode immersed in the salt. The material to be treated is contained in a basket 17 of steel wire mesh, supported by members 15, 16. Grids 23, 24 of high carbon steel which is more corrodible than the basket may be arranged as shown. A potential difference of 0.1-2 volts is applied at 25, 26, the container 13 being the cathode, or in some cases the potential difference between basket and container is sufficient without the application of an external potential difference. In a modification, the grids may be used without the basket.
