Abstract
865,192. Preventing corrosion. ALBRIGHT & WILSON (MFG.) Ltd. July 19, 1957 [July 27, 1956], No. 22897/57. Class 123(1) The corrosion of copper or its alloys in water systems is prevented by adding to the water from 0À5 parts to 5À0 parts per million of an inhibitor consisting of a water-soluble 1,2,3,- triazole, the preferred substance being 1,2,3,- benzotriazole. Where iron or steel are present in the system, small amounts, for example, 25 parts per million of an alkali metal molecularly dehydrated phosphate such as sodium phosphate glass may also be added to the water. The triazole inhibitor, which is most effective in water of a pH range of 5 to 7 inhibits corrosion of copper and also rapidly reduces the galvanic attack of steel coupled to cuprous metals, the latter effect being most marked when the phosphate is also present. The inhibitor reduces the dissolving of copper by the water and so reduces the deleterious action of dissolved copper on the corrosion of more anodic metals such as steel, zinc or aluminium. In cooling installations where mercury salts tend to contaminate the water, the triazole inhibitor prevents the deposition of mercury and mercury salts on both copper and aluminium. The inhibitor with or without the phosphate is effective in waterrecirculating systems employing chloramine as a purifier, the protective film of benzotriazole on the copper being unaffected by the chloramine.
