Abstract

A corrosion inhibitor for cast iron, steel, copper, brass, aluminium and its alloys, and zinc, comprises a benzoate, a nitrite and a buffering agent to maintain the pH between 6.0 and 9.0 at 15 DEG C. The buffering agent is an acid salt of polybasic acid e.g. potassium or sodium dihydrogen phosphate or disodium or dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, and it may be formed in situ e.g. by using sodium hydroxide or carbonate and phosphoric acid. The inhibitor may be used with ethylene, propylene, and polyethylene glycols and glycerol. In an example, the inhibitor comprises (per cent by weight) sodium benzoate 5.0, sodium nitrite 0.5, disodium hydrogen phosphate 1.53, sodium dihydrogen phosphate 1.46, water 0.6, ethylene glycol balance.
