Abstract

1,221,996. Anti-freeze. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 29 Feb., 1968 [23 March, 1967], No. 9821/68. Heading C4X. A corrosion inhibited anti-freeze, suitable for use (after dilution with water) in the cooling system of an automobile, consists of a glycol anti-freeze agent and (a) 1À0-5À0% borax, (b) 0À01-0À25% alkali metal metasilicate, (c) 0À01-0À25% sodium mercaptobenzothiazole and/or mercaptothiazoline and/or benzotriazole, (d) 0À05-1À0% nitrophenol having the formula C 6 (NO 2 )R 1 R 2 R 3 R 4 R 5 wherein R 1 represents a nitro group, a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, R 2 represents a nitro group, a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, R 3 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, R 4 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, R 5 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, (e) 0-0À25% sodium nitrite, together with enough of an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate to give the composition a pH of 7À5- 9À5 and enough water to maintain the components in solution (all percentages being by weight based on the total composition). Mono-, di- and tri-nitrophenols, cresols and xylenols and alkyl nitrophenols up to tri-tert-butyl nitrophenols, di-tert-butyl-trinitrophenols and tri-tert-butyl-dinitrophenols are specified; picric acid is preferred.
