Abstract

A phosphating solution for treating metals is formed by reacting iron with an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal salt of chromic acid, an alkali metal salt of phosphoric acid, orthophosphoric acid and a zinc compound such as zinc oxide or zinc sulphate, the reacting iron being removed when the solution turns green and has a pH of 1.5-2.5. Potassium or sodium nitrate, wetting agents, emulsifiers, surface activators and cellulose esters may also be present in the solution. The chromate may be sodium or potassium bichromate and the phosphate mono-, di-, or trisodium phosphate. The solutions when used in treating metal surfaces combine the effects of descaling, inhibiting and forming a protective film.
