Abstract

1,193,460. Modifying metallic surfaces. GERHARD COLLARDIN G.m.b.H. Dec. 6, 1967 [Feb. 16, 1967], No. 55391/67. Heading C7U. Zinc, iron or galvanized surfaces are coated by treating with a solution free from chromic acid, phosphoric acid and oxalic acid and which contains 0À1 to 2 g/l based on the metal of one or more complex flourides of Fe, Ti, Zr, or Si, 0À3 to 10 g/l of nitrate ions or a corresponding amount of another oxidizing agent with a pH of 1À8 to 3À5 at a temperature of 5 to 95‹ C. for 3 to 45 seconds. The metal ions are added to the solution in the form of their soluble salts while in the case of Ti, Zr and Si they may be added as the corresponding fluoride complex. The fluoride ions are added as HF or its salts. The oxidizing agents are: nitrate, nitrite, chlorate, bromate, hydrogen peroxide, aliphatic and aromatic nitro and nitroso compounds e.g. nitroguanidine, picric acid, nitrophenals, mono and di-nitrobenzylsulphonic acid. The simplest solution used is one of ferric nitrate and hydrofluoric acid. The coated surface may be passicated with solutions containing 0À01 to 5 g/l of chromic acid and/or phosphoric acid.
