Abstract

A finely crystalline phosphate layer is applied to a surface of iron, steel, zinc or an alloy thereof by a solution containing 1-24 grams/ litre of zinc, at least 3.9 grams/litre of phosphate, 0.5-30 grams/litre of barium, the molar ratio of barium:zinc ranging from 0.075 to 5, the solution containing an accelerator, not more than 5 grams/litre of iron, and has a pH in the range 2.2-3.8. The barium is added as the nitrate, chloride or fluoride. The solution may also contain up to 30 grams/litre of ammonium ion and/or an alkali metal. The accelerator used may be a nitrate in amount such that the ratio NO3 : PO4 is 0.1-10.0. Other accelerators such as nitrite, chlorate, hydrogen peroxide or nitroguanidine may be used. The solution may be applied by immersion or spraying at a temperature in the range 40-100 DEG C. A composition for preparing or replenishing the bath may be in solid form or aqueous solution and comprises 4-24% of zinc, 6-43% of barium, 0.15-60% of accelerator, 8-50% of phosphate, 0.1-8% of urea and/or 0.1-16% of urea nitrate, the ratio of NO3:PO4 being 0.1-10.0 and the molar ratio of barium:zinc being 0.075-5.0. 0.1-20% of ammonium ion and/or alkali metal may also be present.
