Abstract

An aqueous acidic coating-phosphate solution suitable for treating surfaces of iron, iron-base alloys, zinc and zinc-base alloys, comprises a phosphate of one or more of iron, zinc and manganese, and the hypophosphite radical, and has a pH of 1.8-3.2. The hypophosphite radical may be introduced into the solution as hypophosphorous acid or as the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or zinc, manganese or iron salts thereof. The solution may also contain accelerators such as nitrates, nitrites, sulphites, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxylamine, m-nitrobenzene sulphonate and picric acid. Fluoride may be added, particularly for coating zinc, in the form of hydrofluoric acid, sodium borofluoride or sodium bifluoride. Aqueous concentrates containing phosphoric acid, sodium hypophosphite and zinc, manganese or iron or a compound thereof may be used to replenish the coating bath; they may also be used to introduce hypophosphite into coating-phosphate solutions free of this radical. It is stated that the coatings formed act as a lubricant during drawing and are receptive to paint.
