Abstract

An aqueous solution for forming a phosphate coating on a succession of ferrous metal surfaces comprises zinc phosphate in which the weight ratio (Zn+Fe):P2O5 is between 1.1-4.5 to 1, at least 2 g./1. nitrate ions and urea. For an immersion process the temperature is 70-100 DEG C. and for a spraying process 60-100 DEG C. The surface may be given a pretreatment with a solution containing titanium and a condensed phosphate, as in the parent Specification.
