Abstract
The corrosion-resistance of an aluminium metal or alloy surface is improved by treating a chromate conversion coating upon the surface at a temperature of at least 65 DEG C. with an aqueous alkaline (pH 8 to 12) solution containing 15 to 100 g/1 of a soluble hexavalent chromium-containing compound (calculated as Na2Cr2O7) e.g. one or more Na, K, Li or ammonium salts of chromic acid. The chromate conversion coating may be formed on the surface by treating it with an acidic solution containing soluble hexavalent Cr ions (chromic acid) and an halogenated accelerating agent, e.g. KZr- and ammonium boro-fluorides, with or without ferro- or ferricyanide ions and/or salts of complex heteropolymolybdates and/or Ba, Sb, or Sn ions.
