Abstract
Aqueous acidic alkali-free solutions for chromating surfaces of Zn and its alloys, e.g. galvanized or electrodeposited Zn, contain at least 3.0 g/l of Zn2+ (calculated as Zn), from 5.0 to 75 g/l of Cr6+ (calculated as CrO3), at least 1 g/l of complex fluoride radical, and at least 1 g/l of Cl- (calculated as Cl), the solutions having a pH maintained between 0.57 and 3.0. "Alkali-free" means excluding alkali metal, alkaline-earth metal and ammonium ions. The solutions may also contain HNO3 or its Zn salt and/or trivalent Cr. The constituents may be provided by ZnO, ZnCl2, Zn bichromate or ZnSiF6; CrO3 or a Zn salt thereof; HBF4, H2SiF6, H2TiF6 and/or their Zn salts; and HCl. The coating solutions are applied to Zn or Zn alloy surfaces by spraying, dipping or roller coating. The solution temperature may be 12 to 65 DEG C. and the contact time may be 5 to 30 secs. The metal may be precleaned, chromated, water rinsed, air-dried, coated with a siccative finish and baked.
