Abstract
A chemical conversion coating is formed on a magnesium alloy containing between 6% and 9% by weight of aluminium by treating first with a solution having a pH from 7.0-11.0, and containing a fluoride and a phosphate, at a temperature between 55 DEG C. and 82 DEG C., rinsing with water and then treating at a temperature between 21 DEG C. and 88 DEG C. with a solution (pH 0.8-1.2) free from halide and sulphate ions and containing tri- and hexavalent chromium and a phosphate. The solutions may have non-ionic wetting agents, e.g. polyethoxylated phenols. In an example, the first solution (pH 9.5) contains (parts in grams) tetrasodium pyrophosphate 17, sodium fluoride 3.4, water to make 1 litre (pH 9.5). The second solution (pH 1) contains sodium dihydrogen phosphate 6.8, sodium dichromate 2.8, chromium trioxide 5.4, chromic nitrate 6, water 1 litre.
