Abstract

A microcrystalline phosphate coating, e.g. of weight between 0.8 and 1.6 g./m.2, is formed on a metal surface, e.g. of iron or zinc or an alloy thereof, by treatment with an aqueous acidic zinc phosphate solution, such as of Zn(H2PO4)2, containing from 0.02 to 1 g/l of aluminium ions as a refining agent for the coating. The aluminium ions may be introduced into the solution as aluminium hydroxide, to form Al(H2PO4)3, or a soluble aluminium salt such as the acetate, sulphate, phosphate, carbonate or fluoborate. The ratio of Al:Zn ions preferably lies between 1:7 and 1:40. Oxidizing agents may be added to the solution, e.g. H2O2, nitrates such as Zn(NO3)2 and NaNO3, chlorates, or organic nitro-derivatives. An example gives a steel plate immersed in the above solution at 80 DEG C. for 7 minutes, after a conventional degrease, and prior to water rinsing and rinsing in chromic acid solution.
