Abstract

PURPOSE:To remarkably enhance the pitting corrosion resistance of Al or an Al alloy by a chemical conversion treating of the material with a weakly acidic aqueous soln. contg. an oxidizing agent, a V compound or a Ti salt besiees a Zn compound and a water soluble silicate as essential components. CONSTITUTION:By immersing Al or an Al alloy in a chemical conversion treatment soln., Zn is deposited on the surface by the substitution reaction of Al with Zn to enhance the pitting corrosion resistance of the Al surface. The treating soln. is a weakly acidic aqueous soln. of 2-6 pH contg. 0.001-1mol/l zinc compound such as zinc nitrate or zinc sulfate and 0.0001-0.1mol/l water soluble silicate such as sodium silicate as essential components and further contg. 0.0001-0.1mol/l oxidizing agent such as nitric acid or hydrogen peroxide or >=1 kind of compound selected from vanadates such as NH4VO3 and Ti salts such as sodium titanium fluoride. The chemical conversion treatment is carried out with the soln. at 60 deg.C for about 10min.
