Abstract
A dyed chromate coating is formed on a zinc or zinc alloy surface using a solution consisting of chromic-acid, an inorganic chloride, and an inorganic sulphate, washing the surface, and then dyeing it. The chloride may be sodium, magnesium, calcium, cobalt, copper, zinc, nickel, and ammonium. The sulphate may be sodium, magnesium, zinc, copper, nickel, chromium and titanium. Zinc oxide may also be added. In a specific example, the bath consists of 80 g. 1 chromic acid, 10 g. 1 sodium chloride, and 30 g. 1 copper sulphate, and the dye is red alizarin.
