Abstract
A method of providing a brown or bronze finish on an article of aluminium or its alloys comprises forming an absorbent oxide coating on the surface of the article, precipitating ferric hydroxide within the coating, and then toning the colour by treatment with gallic, pyrogallic or like organic acid. The hydroxide may be precipitated by immersion of the coated surface in an aqueous solution of ferric ammonium oxalate, ferric sulphate, ferric chloride, ferric nitrate or ferric alum. After the toning treatment the article may be sealed against discolouration by immersion in boiling water or in a nickel acetate bath.
