Abstract
The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises the treatment of articles made of aluminium or aluminium alloy and having an oxide-coating produced by non-electrolytic means. The article is immersed in an aqueous bath containing 1 to 20 per cent by weight of pH of 4.5 to 8, and at a temperature of 100 DEG dissolved oxalate of one or more alkali metals or ammonium, said bath being at a to 200 DEG F. so as to prevent irregular colouring and spotting of the coating by a subsequent colouring step. The pH may be adjusted by adding sodium or potassium hydroxide or oxalic acid, and the time of treatment is 1 to 30 minutes. The bath may also contain normal or complex aluminium oxalate salts the aluminium content of which does not exceed 40 per cent by weight of the dissolved alkali metal oxalate. On coming from the oxalate bath, the articles may be rinsed in water, immersed briefly in a 5 to 25 per cent sulphuric acid bath at room temperature, again rinsed, and thereafter dyed. The application of this treatment to non-electrolytic coatings does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
