Abstract

491,618. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys ; ornamenting. SCHENK, M. July 8, 1937, No. 19024. Convention date, July 13, 1936. Addition to 455,412. [Class 41] [Also in Group XV] Aluminium or an alloy thereof is provided with an opaque protective coating by electrolytic treatment with A.C. or D.C. (as anode) in a bath containing at least one salt of zirconium or of thorium, with or without a titanium salt, e.g. one titanium and one zirconium salt, or one titanium and one thorium, or one zirconium and one thorium. The bath may contain also (1) phosphoric, arsenic, boric, chromic or permanganic acid, or (2) oxalic, malonic, succinic, glycollic, lactic, gluconic, tartaric or citric acid, or (3) the acid or neutral salts of these inorganic or organic acids with alkali metals, ammonium or organic bases, or (4) glycerine, glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, mannite, glucose, cane sugar, dimethylcellulose or dextrine. The aluminium &c. article, before treatment, may be degreased with, e.g. benzene, etched with, e.g. soda or nitric acid, or given a polished, sand-blasted or fluted surface, whereby bright enamel-like or half-matte to fully matte effects can be obtained. Aluminiumoxide-coated articles may be treated according to the invention. The coating may be (a) coloured with dyestuffs, coloured oils, metallic soaps, or varnishes, or whitened with water solutions of titanium, zirconium or thorium salts, the salts being hydrolysed by heat or chemicals, or (b) made water-repellent with aliphatic acids or alkali or strong base salts thereof, or with sulphonated oil, or (c) coated with varnishes or resins. The coated articles are washed, dyed &c., and the coating is hardened by heating at 100-150‹ C. for 15-45 minutes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of hafnium salts instead of zirconium or thorium salts and to waterproofing the coating by treatment with fatty acid compounds. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
