Abstract

Beryllium is anodized in an aqueous solution containing borate and free hydroxyl ions, typically sodium borate and sodium hydroxide produced by adding excess sodium hydroxide to a boric acid solution. The anodic coating, which may be 0.1 to 0.3 mil thick, comprises a beryllium oxide-boron composition. As described the anodizing bath contains per litre 177 g sodium borate and 30 g sodium hydroxide and is used at 100 to 120 DEG F. with an applied potential of 6v. Various colours of coating from light grey to dark brown and containing blue, violet or olive tints may be obtained. Cleaning or other surface preparation treatment may be employed before anodizing.
