Abstract

A spent chromic acid treating solution, containing trivalent chromium ions and foreign metal ions such as of Cu, Zn, Fe, Ni and Cd, is reconditioned by supplying the solution as anolyte to an electrodialysis cell 10 having anode and cathode compartments e.g. B1, B2 and A1, A2, A3, A4, each containing respectively an anode 38, e.g. of lead or lead alloy (Pb-Sb, Pb-Sn or Pb-Ag), or a cathode 35, e.g. of steel, nickel or nickel alloy and separated by a cation permeable membrane 17, and applying a voltage to move the foreign metal ions from the anolyte through the membrane into the catholyte, e.g. HCl solution, while maintaining the membrane permselective to restrict passage of Cr ions and reoxidizing the trivalent chromium in the anolyte into hexavalent chromium. As shown, the catholyte may be circulated through the cell, removed therefrom via outflow trough C and pipe line 45 to tank E, pumped through filter 56 e.g. to extract precipitated Cu, and returned to the cell via manifold <PICT:1102899/C6-C7/1> 52. The reconditioned anolyte may be returned from the cell via outflow trough D and pipe line 64 to an actual treating tank F, e.g. for chromium plating, bright pickling copper or copper alloys, stripping copper coatings from steel or alumina from aluminium anodizing Zn, Al, Mg, or chromating Zn, Cd, Al, Mn, which is connected back to the cell via manifold 63, to maintain the treating solution in a fully usable condition during the treating operation.
