Abstract

In a process for colouring an anodic oxide film on aluminium, alternating current is passed between the anodized aluminium and a nickel counter-electrode using an acidic electrolyte containing a dissolved nickel compound, the pH of the electrolyte being held at 3.5-5.5. The electrolyte may also contain an ammonium salt e.g. may contain nickel sulphate and ammonium sulphate, and may also contain boric acid. Various shades of colour may be produced using an applied voltage of 5-25 volts and a treatment time of 3-30 mins. A final sealing treatment in boiling or near-boiling water may be applied.
