Abstract
506,836. Coating magnesium and its alloys. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Dec. 16, 1937, No. 34897. Convention date, March 15. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] A protective and decorative coating is formed upon articles of magnesium or of its alloys by treating with an aqueous solution containing chromic sulphate and an alkali metal chromate or bichromate. The solution preferably contains 1-20 per cent alkali metal chromate and 0À5-20 per cent chromic sulphate. Potassium or ammonium chromic sulphate may be the source of the sulphate. Other salts such as sodium or magnesium chloride or sulphate may be present. The article (e.g a magnesium alloy with 10 per cent Al, 0À1 per cent Mn, 0À5 per cent Si) is cleaned, immersed in the solution (preferably boiling) for 0À5-60 mins., rinsed, and dried.
