Abstract

510,487. Forming protective coatings on metals. HIGH DUTY ALLOYS, Ltd., and ALLEN, F. A. Sept. 13, 1938, No. 26684. Addition to 482,689. [Class 82 (ii)] In a modification of the process for coating articles of magnesium rich alloys forming the subject of the parent Specification, an acidifying agent is added to the aqueous solution of alkali dichromate and nickel sulphate, chromium sulphate, or nickel ammonium sulphate, to produce or maintain a pH value between 2 and 6.4, and preferably between 3.4 and 4.4, the process being thereby facilitated and the protective coating improved. Preferably the acidifying agents employed ionize in solution only slightly, examples being organic acids and salts thereof. An example is given of a bath containing chromium sulphate, potassium dichromate, acetic acid, and sodium acetate. The articles may be cleaned in a bath of chromic and nitric acids, and may be then given a sulphuric acid dip, before being treated in the coating bath.
