Abstract

Articles, or portions thereof, formed of magnesium-rich alloys are given a corrosion-resistant coating by immersion in a heated aqueous solution of alkali dichromate and nickel sulphate, chromium sulphate, or nickel ammonium sulphate. The articles are cleaned, dipped in a bath of 10 per cent nitric acid, and then treated for ten minutes in a 10 per cent solution of boiling caustic soda before immersion in the coating bath. Preferably the bath includes up to 20 per cent sodium or potassium dichromate and up to 10 per cent sulphate. In an example the bath consists of 100 grams each of sodium dichromate and nickel ammonium sulphate in 1 litre of water.
