Abstract

530,972. Treating metallic surfaces to produce a modified surface. SCHENK, M., May, 18, 1939, No. 14862. Convention date, May 20, 1938. [Glass 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Corrosion-resisting layers are produced on articles of Al or A1 alloys by forming, chemically or electrolytically, layers consisting at least in part of oxide or hydroxide of Al, and treating said layers with a hot aqueous solution of a neutrally reacting inorganic alkali salt the concentration of which corresponds to at least the saturation concentration at 20‹ C. while its solution in water at this concentration has a pH value between 6.5 and 8.2. The solution may comprise 12 parts by weight of potassium sulphate at 90‹C. Sulphates, thiosulphates, chlorates, perchlorates, phosphates, bromates and selenates may be used. A capillarily active substance, such as propyl or amyl alcohol fatty acids, or their compounds, aromatic sulphonic acids, sulphonated alcohols or sulphonated fatty acids, may be added to reduce the surface tension of the solution. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that when capillarily active substances are employed, the concentration of the salt solution may be diminished, or reduced to zero ; thus a 2 per cent. solution of the substances known as Invadine B or Jgepon T in distilled water may be used without any addition of salt. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
