Abstract

Titanium and alloys consisting predominantly of titanium are de-scaled by treatment with a hot, strong aqueous solution of a caustic alkali containing a fluoride, tartrate, citrate or cyanide of an alkali metal or a mixture of such compounds. The solution preferably contains, by weight, at least 30% caustic alkali and 10-20% of the additional compound, and may also contain an alkali metal nitrate in amount not exceeding 10%. After the de-scaling treatment, the metal may, if necessary, be acid-pickled, e.g. in an aqueous solution containing 25% nitric acid and 5% hydrofluoric acid. Specification 823,928 is referred to.
