Abstract

Articles of magnesium and alloys containing at least 85% of magnesium are cleaned by treatment with an aqueous solution containing glycollic acid and a nitrate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonium. The solution preferably contains 10-40% by weight of glycollic acid and an amount of nitrate ion corresponding to 1/3 rd to 1/10 th of the weight of glycollic acid. The nitrate may be added to the solution as such or by adding nitric acid together with a hydroxide or carbonate or metal (e.g. magnesium) to the solution. Glycollic acid may be recovered from the used solution by passing the solution through an ion exchange resin.
