Abstract
The corrosion of copper and its alloys is inhibited by treating the copper with a 0.01 - 1% solution of soap or a 0.05 - 10% solution of a chromate and/or dichromate followed by treating with at least one benzotriazole compound. The soap may be an ammonium, alkanolamine or alkali metal soap of stearic acid or higher fatty acid and the chromate or dichromate that of an alkali metal or ammonium. The benzotriazole compound may be benzotriazole itself or a 5-substituted derivative such as alkyl benzotriazoles in which the alkyl group is a straight or branched chain and contains 1-20 carbon atoms. The benzotriazole may be used as a solid compound, a vapour or preferably as a 0.01 - 10% solution.
