Abstract

A magnesium or magnesium based alloy is uniformly reduced in size by immersion in an aqueous solution comprising nitric acid and at least 3% by weight of ammonium or an alkali or alkaline earth metal nitrate, a relative motion being maintained between the metal and the solution. The solution preferably contains 0.7%-25% by weight of nitric acid and 10%-30% by weight of the nitrate, the solution temperature during treatment is up to 43 DEG C. Part of the magnesium article to be treated may be masked by coating with a resin such as polyvinyl chloride. In an example an alloy containing 96% Mg, 3% Al and 1% Zn was degreased in alkali, water rinsed and then treated in the solution.
