Abstract

Deposition of boiler scale and corrosion in heating systems are prevented by adding to the water an amino-polycarboxylic acid or an alkali metal or hydrazine salt thereof, in amounts more than 0.0001%, and from 0.0001-1.0% of hydrazine. The actual amount of amino-polycarboxylic acid or salt thereof depends on the amount of salt causing hardness in the water, and the amount of hydrazine is such that there is a small excess always present in the water. The amino-polycarboxylic acid or salt thereof consists of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, nitrilo-triacetic acid, the alkali metal salts thereof or the hydrazine salts of diamine tetraacetic acid; and said acid is capable of forming stable complexes with metal ions. Preferably an excess of 0.1 mg./l. of hydrazine is always present in the water.
