Abstract
An aqueous acid pickling solution is inhibited by the addition of at least one compound having the general formula <FORM:0951729/C3/1> where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with 8-22 C atoms, R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with 1-3 C atoms and X is a halide. The radical R may be derived from natural fats and oils such as soy bean oil, coconut oil or tallow. The aqueous acid solution contains 2-20% of an acid such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, sulfamic and citric, and 0.01-2% weight of the inhibiting quaternary ammonium compound. The solution may also contain dibutylthiourea and ferric chloride. The metals cleaned may be ferrous, aluminium, zinc or brass.
