Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils, e.g. gasoline, have added thereto to inhibit corrosion a mixture of an acid of formula <FORM:0922451/III/1> wherein n varies from 10 to 42 and x varies from 6 to 10, and a quaternary ammonium compound of formula <FORM:0922451/III/2> wherein R1R2 represents an alkyl-substituted aryl group, R1 being an alkyl group of 6 to 15 carbon atoms, and R2 being an aryl group, and R3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and Y is a halogen atom. The acids are dimers of di- and tri-enoic acids, the dimers of sorbic, palmitolic, linoleic, humoceric, eicosinic, eleostearic, and octadecadienoic acids being mentioned. Many quaternary ammonium compounds are specified in which R1R2 is dodecylbenzyl, heptylbenzyl, octylnaphthyl, octylbenzyl, nonylbenzyl, nonylnaphthyl, or tridecylbenzyl, R3 is methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl, and Y is chlorine or bromine.
