Abstract

A mineral lubricating oil contains a small amount, sufficient to prevent rusting of ferrous metal surfaces, of a glycine compound selected from the group consisting of: (1) an amic acid of an alkenyl succinic acid anhydride having from 8 to 35 carbon atoms in the alkenyl radical, and glycine; (2) amine mono- and di-salts of (1) wherein the salt-forming amine is a tert-alkyl primary amine having a tertiary carbon atom attached to the nitrogen atom and containing 6 to 30 carbon atoms per tert-alkyl radical; (3) a mono-amide of (1) wherein the amide-forming amine is a tert-alkyl primary amine as in (2), (4) an N-carboxymethyl-alkenylsuccinimide containing 8 to 35 carbon atoms in the alkenyl group; and (5) an amine salt of (4) with a tert-alkyl primary amine as in (2). Many specific examples of suitable substituted succinic anhydrides, and suitable amines, are given. The amount of the additive may be from 0.001 to 10.0% by weight of the oil.
