Abstract

An insulating oil, such as a transformer oil, having a reduced tendency to oxidize, comprises a mineral base oil having incorporated therein (1) a metal deactivator which is an aromatic amine of the formula <FORM:0772491/III/1> wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are simila or dissimilar, are selected from H and alkyl radicles containing up to 12 carbon atoms and together do not contain more than 24 carbon atoms, and X is NH2 of COOH and (2) an antioxidant which is phenyl a - or b - naphthylamine. Suitable aromatic amines are o - phenylene diamine, anthranilic acid and their nuclear-substituted alkyl derivatives. In the examples, insulating oils are described which contain mineral oil, phenyl b - naphthylamine and o-phenylene diamine or anthranilic acid. For comparison purposes, insulating oils are described which contain mineral oil and phenyl b - naphthylamine or anthanilic acid only, or mineral oil, phenyl b - naphthylamine and one of disalicylal propylene diamine (added in toluene solution), di - salicylal ethylene diamine and zinc hexyl dithiophosphate.
