Abstract

A liquid composition, particularly suitable as a transformer oil, switch oil or turbine oil, comprises a lubricating oil and minor proportions of (a) a secondary aromatic mono-, di- or polyamine in which the nitrogen atom is attached directly to two aromatic radicles; and (b) an oil-soluble metal or metalloid salt of an organic dithiocarbamic acid. The lubricating oil may be mineral oil or a dicarboxylic acid diester such as di(2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate. Ingredient (a) may carry alkyl, aryl or etherified hydroxyl groups as substituents on the ring and may be chosen from phenyl alpha- or beta-naphthylamine, xylyl beta naphthylamine, n-heptyl-, p,p1 - dioctyl -, or p - isopropoxy - diphenylamine, N,N1 - diphenyl - p - phenylene diamine and diphenylamine. Ingredient (b) has the formula: <FORM:0795811/III/1> where R1 and R2 are the same or different hydrocarbon radicles or together form part of a ring structure, M is a metal or metalloid and x is the valency of M. Ingredient (b) may be chosen from zinc, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, arsenic, bismuth and selenium di-n-butyl dithiocarbamates and zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate. The composition may contain additional ingredients such as rust inhibitors. In the examples, compositions are described consisting of (1) mineral lubricating oil, zinc di-n-butyl dithiocarbamate and one of: phenyl alpha- or beta-naphthylamine, p-isopropoxydiphenylamine, p,p1 - dioctyl - diphenylamine, diphenylamine, N,N1 - diphenyl - p - phenylene diamine and a commercial mixture of octylated arylalkylated diphenylamines; (2) mineral lubricating oil, phenyl beta-naphthylamine and arsenic, bismuth, selenium, cadmium, nickel or cobalt di-n-butyl dithiocarbamate; (3) mineral lubricating oil, p,p1-dioctyl diphenylamine and nickel di-n-butyl dithiocarbamate; and (4) di (2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate, phenyl betanaphthylamine and zinc dimethyl dithiocarbamate. For comparison purposes, compositions similar to those of the examples are described wherein ingredient (a) or (b) is omitted. According to the Provisional Specification, the composition may be a grease, while ingredient (b) may be a salt of a nitrogen base such as piperidine cyclopentamethylene dithiocarbamate. Compositions are described in the Provisional Specification consisting of (i) mineral lubricating oil, phenyl beta-naphthylamine, piperidine cyclopentamethylene dithiocarbamate and an alkylated succinic acid type ferrous metal corrosion inhibitor; and (ii) di (2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate, n-heptyl diphenylamine and zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate.
