Abstract

Castor oil and the esters of ricinoleic acid, e.g. butyl ricinoleate and glyceryl diricinoleate, or lubricating oils and greases comprising a major proportion of castor oil, are stabilized against oxidation and gum-formation by the incorporation of from 0.05 to 2.0 per cent. by weight of an organic compound of tin or antimony and 0.1 to 5.0 per cent by weight of an aromatic or heterocyclic secondary amine containing at least three cyclic nuclei, at least two of which are aromatic nuclei attached directly to the nitrogen atom. The amines may be selected from those of the formulae R1-NH-R2, R1-NH-R3-NH-R4 or <FORM:0713423/III/1> , where R1, R3 and R4 are aromatic radicals and R2 is a polycyclic nucleus containing at least one aromatic ring having at least 10 carbon atoms. Amines specified are N-phenyl-a -naphthylamine, N-phenyl-b -naphthylamine, b .b -dinaphthylamine, N-xylyl-b -naphthylamines, N,N1-di(b -naphthyl)-p-phenylene diamine, p thiodiphenylamine, N,N1-diphenyl benzidine and 2.3-benzphenthiazine. The tin or antimony compounds may be the tin or antimony salts or soaps of carboxylic acids, sulphonic acids or organic dithiophosphoric acids, or the tin or antimony derivatives of phenols, phenol thioethers or mercaptans. Compounds specified are tin laurate, tin oleate, tin and antimony naphthenates, tin and antimony petroleum sulphonates, and the tin derivatives of p-t-amyl phenol thioether, of o-stearyl phenol thioether and of ethylene glycol mononaphthenate cresyl dithiophosphate. A third additive comprising the neutral organic phosphite esters of hydroxy aromatic thioethers and disulphides may also be used. These compounds are described in Specification 574,445 and include di-(3-carbomethoxy-4-hydroxy phenyl) thioether cresyl phosphite and the phosphite ester of t-butyl cresol thioether. When using this third additive, a fourth additive comprising the reaction products of aldehydes or ketones with water-soluble primary or secondary amines, as described in Specification 588,864, may be advantageously employed. Di-morpholinyl phenyl methane is also of use in conjunction with the first three additives. Antioxidants such as the metal salt of an organic dithiophosphoric acid, e.g. zinc di-(a -methyl isoamyl) dithiophosphate, or the metal derivative of an alkylated phenol thioether, viscosity index improvers, foam inhibitors detergents or ferrous metal corrosion inhibitors may be included in the compositions of the invention. Compositions are also referred to, for purposes of comparison, in which the amine is b -naphthylamine, diphenylamine or triphenylamine.
