Abstract

Chromium and tin petroleum sulphonates for use in lubricants (see Group III) are prepared by reacting alkali or alkaline earth petroleum sulphonates or the free acids with salts of chromium or tin such as chrome alum or stannous chloride. Mixed salts of chromium and tin are similarly prepared. In an example, an alcoholic solution of calcium petroleum sulphonate is agitated with equivalent molecular proportions of stannous chloride or chrome alum, the precipitated calcium sulphate filtered off, and the alcohol evaporated. The tin or chromium petroleum sulphonates are viscous liquids or solids. In other examples, sodium petroleum sulphonate is heated with chrome alum and water at 100 DEG C. and the mixture extracted with benzene. A compound containing 10 to 15 per cent chromium petroleum sulphonate, about 40 per cent sodium petroleum, sulphonate, and 45 to 50 per cent mineral oil is obtained.ALSO:A lubricating composition for use at high temperatures in internal combustion engines comprises a lubricating oil base containing minor proportions of organic compounds of both chromium and tin, at least one being a petroleum sulphonate. A small proportion of alkali and/or alkaline earth petroleum sulphonates, chromium or tin oleates, naphthenates, and substituted phenolates, tin tetraphenyl, aromatic thio ethers and aromatic hydroxy substituted di- or poly-sulphides having carboxy or ester substituents (see Specifications 455,235 and 561,898), phosphite or thiophosphite esters (see Specification 574,445), tricresyl phosphate, tributyl phosphite, and mercaptobenzthiazole may also be present. The proportions in which the ingredients are added are from 0.01 to 2.0 per cent, for example, about 1.0 per cent, by weight of the petroleum sulphonates of chromium and tin and less than an equal quantity of sodium and/or calcium petroleum sulphonate, together with from 0.1 to 1.0 per cent of other lubricant additive. When chromium and tin petroleum sulphonates are both present they are preferably in the relative proportions of 1 to 4. Up to 4 times their weight of tin or chromium oleate, naphthenate, or substituted phenolate may also be added. The chromium and tin compounds are prepared by reacting alkali or alkaline earth petroleum sulphonates with salts of chromium or of tin such as chrome alum or stannous chloride (see Group IV (b)), or these compounds can be prepared in admixture together with the desired proportion of sodium petroleum sulphonate by heating an aqueous solution of sodium petroleum sulphonate with chrome alum, chromium sulphate, or chromium chloride and with stannous chloride for 18 hours, extracting with benzene and evaporating the benzene off.
