Abstract

A lubricant comprises a major amount of an ester base oil, a minor amount of an organic amine and a minor amount of an amide of general formula <FORM:1077607/C4-C5/1> or <FORM:1077607/C4-C5/2> where R is a C1-C20 alkyl or up to C20 aryl group, R1 is a C2-C20 alkylene or up to C20 arylene group. An extensive list of esters is given which are formed from mono- and/or poly-hydric alcohols (including polyglycols) with mono- and/or poly-carboxylic acids. Amides specified are pyridyl-pelaragonamides, valeramides, acetamides, benzamides and toluamides, and di-pyridyl-adipamides, sebacamides, phthalamides and isophthalamides. Amines specified are phenyl- and phenylthio-naphthylamines, diphenyl and dinaphthyl-amines, mono-and di-amino pyridines, dipyridyl amines, phenyl and naphthyl-pyridylamines and phenothiazine. The compositions may also contain amine salts of monochloromethylphosphonic acid, tricresyl phosphate, chlorinated diphenyl, copper dibutyldithiocarbamate, azelaic acid and silicones.
