Abstract

Synthetic lubricants comprise a saturated carboxylic acid ester and a minor amount of a compound of formula where R 1 and R 2 are each hydrogen, C 1 -C 12 alkyl, phenyl, phenalkyl or cycloalkyl ; R 3 and R 4 are each hydrogen, C 1 -C 9 alkyl, C 1 -C 13 acyl or phenyl; and R 5 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 9 alkyl or halo C 1 -C 9 alkyl. The lubricant may also contain phenothiazine, amine and phenol anti-oxidants (examples given), phosphorus acid esters and amine salts thereof (examples given). The esters may be simple, di-, tri-, tetra-, poly- or complex esters (examples given).
