Abstract

A lubricant comprises a major amount of an ester base oil and a minor amount of an amine salt of general formula <FORM:1077605/C4-C5/1> where R1 and R2 are C1-C20 hydrocarbyl groups and R3 and R4 are C1-C12 alkyl groups and a minor amount of a primary, secondary or tertiary amine each non-hydrogen substituent of which is a C4-C10 mono- or di-nuclear unsaturated cyclic group having 0, 1 or 2 nitrogen atoms. The ester base oil may be derived from a mono- and/or poly-hydric alcohol (including polyglycols) with a mono- and/or poly-carboxylic acid (many esters are specified). Amines specified are diaryl and triaryl amines, dipyridyl amines, amino pyridines and amino-quinolines (many examples being given). Amine salts specified are diisobutylammonium diisobutyl, neopentyl-n-butylammonium phenyl isobutyl, hexylisoamylammonium benzyl phenyl, diisobutylammonium diphenyl and methyl isobutylammonium naphthyl phenyl dithiocarbamate.
