Abstract

An emulsifiable lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a mineral oil, up to 25% by weight of the condensation product of an alkylene oxide and an organic compound having at least one active hydrogen atom, and a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic alcohol having between 8 and 30 carbon atoms. The alkylene oxide may be ethylene or propylene oxide; the organic compound may be a C8-C20 aliphatic alcohol, an alkyl phenol, a C8-C20 carboxylic acid or a C6-C22 primary or secondary amine. Condensation products having 1 mol. of oleyl alcohol to 6 mols. of ethylene oxide, 1 mol. of iso-octyl phenol to 4-5 mols. of ethylene oxide, and 1 mol. of oleic acid to 2-20 mols. of ethylene oxide are specified. The aliphatic alcohol may be oleyl, cetyl or stearyl alcohol. The mineral oil is preferably a hydrocarbon oil. The composition may contain, as corrosion inhibitor, up to 10% of aliphatic amines or diamines, metal or amine salts of alkaryl sulphonic or carboxylic acids, or the reaction products of aliphatic amines with alkyl carboxylic acids. Preferred corrosion inhibitors are diamines of formula R-NH(CH2)n-NH2 in which R is a C10-C18 aliphatic chain and n is a number from 2 to 6. Bactericides such as m-cresol, anti-oxidants, anti-foam agents and coupling agents such as a lower alcohol or partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol may also be added prior to dispersion in 1 to 99 parts water for use as a metal working lubricant.
