Abstract

Lubricants comprise alkyl butyrolactone-a -acetic acids of formula <FORM:1037985/C4-C5/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or alky radicals with a total of from 10 to 300 carbon atoms, specifically polybutenylbutyrolactone-a -acetic acid and dodecylbutyrolactone-a -acetic acid (see Divisions C2 and C3) with an oil of lubricating viscosity. Base oils listed are naphthenic, paraffin and mixed base oils, coal product derivatives, alkylene or alkylene oxide type polymers, dicarboxylic esters, liquid phosphorus esters, alkyl benzenes, polyphenyls, alkyl biphenyl ethers, and silicon polymers, and they may be used singly or admixed.ALSO:The invention comprises alkyl butyrolactone-a -acetic acids of formula <FORM:1037985/C2/1> wherein R1, R2, R3 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals with a total of from 10 to 300 carbon atoms, specifically polybutenylbutyrolactone-a -acetic acid and dodecylbutyrolactone-a -acetic acid. The compounds are prepared by heating an olefine with dimethyl bromo-succinate in the presence of a peroxide catalyst, followed by hydrolysis to the acid. The compounds or amides thereof may be used as rust inhibitors or detergents in lubricating oils.ALSO:The methyl ester of polybutenylbutyrolactone-a -acetic acid may be prepared by heating polybutene with dimethyl bromo-succinate and di-t-butyl peroxide and the product may be hydrolysed to acid. The product may be used after reaction with an ethylene amine as an additive for lubricants.
